Fifth grade student wins Alabama Arbor Day Poster contest

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A fifth grade student, Elena Tetrault, from Hampton Cove Elementary, has won the state's 2014 Arbor Day State Poster contest.

On Wednesday Elena spoke on the capital grounds on the topic, "What the Arbor Day Contest Means to Me," and received an Arbor Week proclamation signed by Governor Bentley.

She was awarded $50 and a one year AUFA membership for her winning poster, designed around the theme "Trees are Terrific...and Energy Wise." 

Around 1,400 students in 26 schools across the state participated in the contest.

Two runners-up, 2nd place Mary Mac Powell from Gulf Shores Elementary and 3rd place Courtney Horn from Columbia Elementary in Madison, were also recognized.

In addition to their cash awards, each student and teacher will receive other prizes provided by contest sponsors.

    Three adult males and one juvenile were arrested in Limestone County on Thursday after a four-hour manhunt and charged with multiple counts stemming from a string of vehicle thefts.Three adult males and one juvenile were arrested in Limestone County on Thursday after a four-hour manhunt and charged with multiple counts stemming from a string of vehicle thefts.

    A ground search ensued that lasted about four hours and covered approximately six miles, ending a few hundred yards east of Hays Mill Road where the suspects were caught in a hunting stand/shoot house.
