First spring severe weather threat expected Thursday

Posted: Updated:

Our first severe weather threat of the spring storm season is anticipated on Thursday.

Much of the day Thursday will remain quiet, but by late afternoon or early evening strong to severe thunderstorms will begin tracking into north Alabama and southern middle Tennessee.

For areas to the west of I-65 expect storms to arrive sometime between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. For locations east of I-65 the estimated arrival time is between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Storms should clear NE Alabama by midnight at the latest. Our primary concern is for damaging wind gusts that may develop along a fast moving squall line of storms. Wind gusts could be as high as 60-80 mph in the strongest storms. There is also going to be a low-end tornado risk, particularly along any breaks in the line.

Plan on staying weather aware through the day Thursday and especially into the evening hours. The WAFF 48 Storm Team will keep you updated on the storm timeline and expected threats in our newscasts, online at, on social media and on our mobile weather app
