New Year's Day Murder Trial Day 1: State seeks to limit media access

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The prosecution sought to deny the media access to the murder trial of two men accused of taking the life of a Columbus State University student.

Dequandrea Truitt, 22, and 20-year-old Shaquille Porter are accused of fatally shooting Charles Foster in 2013 during a New Year's celebration.

Read about the case here.

The state said two witnesses expressed fear of retaliation if they testified against Truitt and Porter.

Senior Assistant District Attorney LaRae Moore and Assistant District Attorney Letitia Sikes testified they have had witnesses in previous cases- not connected to this trial- say they were threatened after the testimony was either printed or broadcasted in local media.

Defense attorney Stacey Jackson claimed there was no evidence that any witness has ever been threatened.

Jackson said the witnesses who complained about their safety were felons and both were seeking plea deals from the state.

Moore testified no witnesses have been offered deals for testimony at this time.

Porter's defense attorney Michael Eddings proclaimed "the press may promote the truth" before asking Judge William Rumer to deny the States request.

Judge Rumer decided the media will be permitted to document the trial in its entirety.

Opening statements are scheduled to begin Tuesday morning at 8:45 a.m.

News Leader 9's Brittany Dionne will be live tweeting from the courtroom. You can follow her tweets here.

According to our news gathering partners at the Decatur Daily, much of the  Decatur City Schools' student body will start the 2018-19 school year in a new location. The district has embarked on the largest building expansion in its history, at a cost of about $100 million.  This unprecedented move will impact nearly half of all students in the district and every student in grades 9-12, a mobilization of students that has not seen since integration in the 1960s.  Deca...More >>
