LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

It was a digital Valentine's Day for student in Lauderdale County Friday. School leaders handed out more than 600 Chrome Books to 8th graders county wide as the first step in the district's technology initiative.

"We're very excited to finally get these. We've been waiting a long time to get them," said 8th grader Ladarius Koger. He continued to say that he's sure the new technology will help make school work more fun.

"It's going to be very exciting to see what they can do for us and they're going to be very helpful for us in school," said Technology Ingratiation Specialist Carol Pace. "Any child these days is what we call a digital native and they're expected to be completely digitized outside of school. Then they come to school and we're making them not do anything they're used to."

Pace said the district's goal is to build up to a one to one initiative, which means eventually each student will have a device. "We decided to start with 8th grade because we thought that would be a good place to catch them before they lose interest and drop out, so start them young. Hopefully we can keep them in the system longer."

The Chrome Books, or mini laptops, will not replace textbooks. This is just an additional tool for both students and teachers. "We certainly aren't going to throw out the textbooks, said Pace. "They are certainly going to be used and we're trying to get our teachers to start with baby steps using technology as long as it's meaningful and not just using it for the sake of using it."
