Florist warns other NES customers not to fall for scam

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Valentine's Day means flower businesses are in overdrive, but a local florist says she is worried about a phone call she has received from scammers.

"This is the absolute biggest day of the year for us," said Carole Vance, co-owner of Flower Express in Belle Meade.

Hearing their power was about to be cut off because of an overdue bill was unthinkable for Vance.

"I said, 'No! You can't do that,'" she said.

The caller pretended he was from Nashville Electric Service and said he wanted a money order for a past due bill, and he wanted it right now.

"They knew exactly what they were doing. They knew the kinds of things to say to somebody in a kind of a situation where you've got a small window of operation," Vance said.

Vance didn't fall for the scam. She called NES and Metro police.

But police told her other victims had fallen for it. One lost $1,400, so Vance wants to get a warning out to other utility customers.

"Took me a while to calm down yesterday because I was quite upset," she said.

NES said they will never ask for personal, billing or credit card information over the phone.

If you receive a suspicious phone call, you should contact NES customer service right away. And don't give any information over the phone or meet someone in person for a payment.

Vance said she doesn't want this holiday - one that symbolizes love and happiness - to end with a heartache.
