Alex Howell studies college-preparatory curriculum while living with his family overseas.
Westlake Village, CA (PRWEB) February 12, 2014
Alex Howell lives in T'bilisi, Georgia, but has started the second semester of his sophomore year with Oaks Christian Online School. He is originally from Nokesville, Virginia, but has been living in the capital of Georgia for 8 months while his dad serves as a contractor for the Georgian armed forces. Alexs father served in the Army for 30 years, and other international posts for the family have included South Korea and Germany. This region of Georgia is famous for its view of Mt. Kazbek in the Caucasus range, and Alex likens the weather to Washington D.C. He has picked up some of the local language, Kartuli, and knows enough to be able to use the citys excellent public transit system, while visiting friends he has made at his local church, the Tbilisi International Fellowship. Alex decided to travel abroad with his family for more adventure, and says, I like the different views on life that I find in other countries.
According to a recent article in the Princeton Review, high school students who study while living overseas benefit by pushing their personal limits and having a dry run at the independence that college requires. You become a more interesting and thoughtful person, which can help with college admissions. You may have a clearer sense of your own personal interests and learning styles, which will lead to a more successful academic career.
Alex hopes that taking online high school courses will also help him better prepare for a future as a computer software engineer. He took a Cyber Security course online last summer and writes script for fun in Python, Pearl and C++ languages. He also is the part-time webmaster for his churchs website. Alexs older brother is a civil engineer working with the U.S. Navy, and he understands the hard work it may take to get into such universities as Virginia Tech or the University of Virginia. Alex is well on his way to developing authentic interests and preparing for college by combining all the best aspects of studying college preparatory coursework, seeing the world and following his passions.
