Bond set for suspect in high-profile Tallassee child sex abuse case

One of the suspects involved in the largest and most unprecedented child sex case in Elmore county returned to the courtroom Tuesday.

Brandy Hughes, involved with another child sex suspect in Tallassee, waived her preliminary hearing.

According to the investigator who testified, Hughes admitted to abusing children and being present while child abuse was taking place. The details of the testimony are graphic and WSFA 12 News has made the decision not to report on them.

Hughes' attorney argued to get her $215,000 bond reduced, but the judge denied the motion, saying this was one of the most horrific child sex cases he's seen in his 25 years on the bench.

Hughes is charged with one count of sex abuse and torture, two counts of sex abuse of a child less than 12, two counts of sodomy first, and one count of first degree rape.

Hughes is the alleged wife of Stephen Conrad, though no court records support the claim. Conrad faces more than 100 child sex abuse charges that were ultimately dropped by the Elmore County District Attorney's office due to coercion from former Tallassee Assistant Police Chief Chris Miles.

Conrad and Hughes have been charged again with new warrants from the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.
