The New Orleans Pelicans said Tuesday that mascot Pierre the Pelican underwent successful surgery yesterday at Ochsner Medical Center in Jefferson.

Pierre was injured in a pickup basketball game with other mascots and underwent reconstructive surgery to repair a broken beak.

Officials with the team said the injury happened Saturday at the Pelicans practice facility in a game with Grizz of the Memphis Grizzlies, Rocky of the Denver Nuggets, Slamson of the Sacramento Kings and Gumbo of the New Orleans Saints.

According to a written release, Pierre suffered the injury late in the game as he drove to the basket and was fouled by Grizz. Pierre broke his beak when he slammed into the padded cushion on the goal.

Team Physician Dr. Matthew McQueen performed the reconstructive surgery and has indicated the procedure was quite involved.  "Injuries like this also affect other aspects of the skull, which had to be addressed."  McQueen and his team of experts, including Curator of Birds for Audubon Zoo Carolyn Atherton, expect Pierre to make a full and speedy recovery.

Fans can send get well wishes to Pierre using the hashtag #GetWellPierre and his Twitter handle @PierreTPelican. An update regarding Pierre's condition will be released Tuesday.
