Sulphur ready to celebrate Centennial

SULPHUR, LA (KPLC) -

With more than 75 fairs and festivals, Southwest Louisiana is known as the festival capital of the state. Next month, the City of Sulphur is not only set to celebrate the Sulphur Mines Festival, but the city's centennial.

To mark the city's 100th year, the folks at the Brimstone Museum have been collecting stories, pictures and artifacts for its centennial exhibit.

"It is going to be fantastic. We have a whole new display on Frasch mining process about the history of Sulphur mines and the history of Sulphur," said Thom Trahan, Brimstone Museum.

At Monday night's City Council meeting the centennial poster and coin were unveiled featuring Herman Frasch, the man who revolutionized the way Sulphur was extracted. Also on hand was the centennial quilt featuring pictures of the city's rich history. Both items along with a prize package will be raffled off at the festival. Tickets cost $10 each.

Mayor Chris Duncan said they learned a lot from the city's "old timers."

"It really has been a lot of fun. They would come to the meetings and tell us about the history and what's been going on in Sulphur over the years. There was some heated discussion about where certain landmarks were. So it was great conversation," said Duncan.

The actual date the governor signed off on Sulphur becoming a village was April 17, 1914. But due to other festivals the city decided to celebrate the milestone in March at the Sulphur Mines Festival. The dates are March 13-16.

Already set to perform is John Michael Montgomery and Smash Mouth. City officials also said 17 local bands are also set to take the stage.
