GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Marshall County EMA estimated between one and three inches of snow overnight Monday. The question is what form it will be? Just snow or a combination of snow and sleet could make driving conditions more hazardous. City, county, and state road crews were put on standby to deal with whatever came their way.

EMA Director Anita McBurnett said things looked good Monday morning but later in the night is when the winter precipitation is expected. It's for that reason she said to make sure you're prepared.

"They need to use this time this afternoon to go ahead and make those last minute runs for necessities," said McBurnett. "And I don't mean bread, milk, and eggs but things like medications if they have a prescription that needs to be refilled. If they have small children they may need extra diapers or formula."

City crews put their spreader trucks filled with sand and salt on standby ready to go, but the city is surrounded by bridges which is always a concern when winter weather strikes. Mountainous roads like Wyeth Mountain Road are also a big concern for local crews.

The last winter event left several stranded vehicles on the road. The city's public works director said they don't have the capability to pre-treat roads so making sure the trucks are full of gas and sand is the best they can do until the hazardous weather arrives.

"We will leave this afternoon and then of course we'll be dispatched again by the police department," said Mike Bush, the Guntersville Public Works Director. "Once the night comes around they'll start seeing these hazardous situations and they'll call and we'll get crews out."

Should a lot of snow fall, Bush said they have a motor grader and a back hoe on standby if needed. District One Commissioner Bill Strickland said that making sure roads to and from the hospital are a top priority.
