BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Southern University students stood united for their chancellor Monday evening.

They are opposed to the system board's decision to not renew the contract of Chancellor James Llorens.

Hundreds of students packed the Royal Cotillion ballroom for a Student Government Association meeting on campus. They want the chancellor to get a contract of three to five years.

The crowd rallied behind Llorens, as it feels he still has a lot to get done for the Jags.

"I'm committed to the university," said Llorens. "I'm committed to moving forward. I know that there's a lot that we have left to do. I don't believe that we've corrected all of our problems. I believe there is a lot of challenges that we've had to overcome."

Llorens added he was not interested in a contract extension that involved President Ronald Mason taking on some of the responsibilities of the chancellor.

The board voted Friday to let the contract for Llorens expire in June.

Students said Llorens has done a great job and they don't want him to leave. They have also setup a Facebook page in support of the chancellor.
