UNA softball 3-3 at Charger Chillout

After falling to Wayne State in the first game of the day, the University of North Alabama softball wrapped up play at the UAH Charger Chillout with a victory over Young Harris to give the team a 3-3 record at the event. The third straight split gives the Lions a 5-3 record on the season.

Chelsea Showers finished the day 4-for-6 at the plate with a pair of solo home runs. Her solo shot against Young Harris helped UNA defeat the Mountain Lions for the third time this season.

In the 2-0 win, Amy Carden led off the game with a single. She later scored on an RBI-double by Chloe Wolf to give the Lions the early lead. Showers provided the insurance run with a blast to left field in the top of the sixth.

Hillary Carpenter made the lead stand with a complete-game shutout. In seven innings, she allowed only one hit with two strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the season.

At the plate, Showers was the only UNA player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3, including the homer in the sixth and single in the third inning.

Against Wayne State, the Lions committed three errors and surrendered three unearned runs. The Warriors took a 3-2 lead into the top of the seventh inning before pulling away with three more runs in the top of the seventh.

Both teams plated single runs in the fourth inning to start the scoring. After WSU struck first, the Lions responded in the bottom of the frame with a solo home run by Showers.

The Warriors regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth before UNA closed the gap to 3-2 on a bases-loaded single by Wolf. With one out and the bases still full, Wayne State went to Lyndsay Butler, who retired the next eight batters, including five strikeouts to get the save.

In the top of the seventh, WSU plated three runs on five hits and took advantage of another UNA error to pull away.

For the game, Showers was 2-for-3 at the plate. Brittany Gillison was also 2-for-3 with a single and a double. BreeAnna Blevins (2-2) took the loss in the circle after allowing three runs off five hits with a strikeout. Only one of the runs was earned.
