Thousands of people in the City of Cullman and Cullman County spent several hours Saturday without electricity due to a transformer failure at a primary substation.  A majority of businesses in downtown Cullman had to close due to the loss of power.

According to Cullman Power Board General Manager Mike Manning, a transformer malfunctioned about 1:00 p.m. at the substation located at the corner of Highways 157 and 31.  The damage and subsequent outage also affected portions of the south Cullman substation, and the Cullman County EMA said as many as 6 total susbstations were affected.  Many Cullman Electric Cooperative members were also without power.

The power was out to most residents in the north, central, and southern portions of the City of Cullman.  Power in the eastern and western parts of the city, for the most part, was not affected, according to Manning.

Utility crews completed the transformer replacement approximately 5 hours later, and all power was set to be restored by 7:00 p.m.  Power officials first thought the repair job would take 10 to 12 hours.

Cullman County's power is generated from the Tennessee Valley Authority.  TVA is not reporting any issues with power delivery to the Cullman area.
