LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Volunteer firefighters across the Tennessee Valley are giving up their weekend to help better serve their communities.

More than fifty departments - some as far away as Pigeon Forge, Tennessee - are being represented at a recruitment and retention workshop in the Shoals this weekend.

Hosted by the Lauderdale County Association of Volunteer Fire Departments, the mission of the workshop is to help motivate and educate departments on ways to increase their numbers to build their volunteer base. With a declining number of volunteer firefighters across the country, organizers are hoping these workshops can help improve the low numbers.

"Unfortunately, changing demographics, changing communities have led to a decline in the number of people that are willing to be dedicated and committed to serving their community, improving the quality of life by serving as volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel," said Greg Render, an instructor.
