Coach pops the question to a teacher during a pep rally

BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) -

It began as a normal pep rally at Bay Waveland Elementary School. The band played, cheerleaders performed and then the dance team took the stage.

The students cheered, and then all the winter athletes were recognized. After that, it was time to turn the attention to the teachers.

"We are who we are because of our great fantastic teachers," Principal, Dr. Cherie Labat said.

"We recently received our impact data and we are an A school."

Each star teacher was called to the stage one-by-one while the students clapped.

"October is Coach Luke Weems, he's absent today, but let's give him a round of applause," Labat said.

"Next we have Ms. Lewis for December. Come on up."

The teachers took a picture and were walking off the stage as another teacher ran up to the principal to let her know she forgot the teacher for November.

"Oh, I'm so sorry, I'm just getting back. We would also like to recognize Ms. Johnson, come on up sorry."

Joy Johnson walked on stage and gave the principal a hug as the students put up signs that said, "Joy will you marry me?"

The principal said, "oh my gosh," and Johnson read the sign in disbelief with her mouth wide open.

Johnson's boyfriend, Coach Luke Weems, then walked out from behind the stage.

"You are my best friend in the entire world," Weems said.

"I love you so so much, I really do."

Then he got on one knee.

"Will you marry me?" Weems asked.

He slipped the ring on her finger, and then they hugged and kissed as the cheerleaders chanted, "she said yes, she said yes."

"Awesome, it feels amazing it really does," Weems said with a huge smile on his face.

"She's a great person and I couldn't be any happier."

Johnson was in complete shock. In fact, she thought Weems was out of town for a conference. All she could say is, "he's perfect."

"It's been a long process," Weems explained.

"Her sister helped me pick out the ring so she had no idea of that. It's been a two week process getting everyone situated so it would work out perfect."

The planning paid off, because it went off without a hitch.

Johnson is a math teacher at Bay Waveland Elementary School and Weems is the PE teacher and coach there. The two met at school and have been dating for about a year.

Another cold morning out there today, but this is the last of that! Temperatures this morning are into the mid to upper teens and low 20s, but the wind chill is pretty much nonexistent because we have a light wind from the south at 2 mph.
