JACKSON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Current Alabama District 8 Senator Shadrack McGill announced Friday that he will be running for the office of Jackson County Revenue Commissioner.
McGill previously announced in December that he would not be seeking re-election for his Senate seat, which covers DeKalb, Jackson and Madison Counties, to be closer at home with his family.
The Republican Senator defeated longtime Democratic incumbent Lowell Barron in 2010.
"As a revenue commissioner, I will be able to go home every night and be home with my family. That means a lot at this point in our lives, as our children are getting older and getting involved in sports and things of that nature," McGill said.
McGill aims to fill the seat held by current Jackson County Revenue Commissioner Ron Crawford, who announced in January he would no longer be running after 30 years in office.
Primaries are set for June 3. McGill will run against Republicans Kermit Cornelison and Kathy Thompson, as well as current Deputy Revenue Commissioner Jeff Arnold, running on the Democratic ticket.
