HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A former Chapman Middle School employee has been accused of sexual contact with a minor.
Special Education teacher Mamon Charles Edwards turned himself in and was booked into jail on Jan. 31. He is charged with second degree sodomy.
Investigators said the victim in the case is a boy between the ages of 12 and 16. The initial report was filed in April 2013.
Huntsville City Schools spokesman Keith Ward confirmed Edwards was an employee of Chapman Middle School, but when HPD notified the superintendent of the upcoming arrest, the superintendent ordered Edwards be removed from the school permanently.
"This is totally unacceptable," said Ward. "It's something that when we find out about this, we act on it immediately because we want to make sure the classroom environment is safe."
Ward said that Superintendent Dr. Casey has recommended that Edwards' position be terminated and that Edwards chose to resign.
A preliminary hearing for Edwards has been scheduled for March 10.
