2014 UNA Signing Class

FLORENCE -- University of North Alabama Head Football Coach Bobby Wallace has announced the signing of 27 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent with the Lions' program.

UNA added 17 high school signees and 10 transfers on National Signing Day.

"Obviously we are very excited that we are adding 27 student-athletes to our program," Wallace said. "All but one of our 17 high school signees are from the state of Alabama and the only one that isn't is the son of one of our former players." UNA's list of signees includes Peyton Satterfield from Blue Ridge, Ga., who is the on of former Lion running back Brian Satterfield, Luke Smothers of Muscle Shoals, Ala., who is the son of former UNA quarterback/receiver Shane Smothers and Kendall Harrison of Decatur, Ala., who is the son of former UNA tight end Jarius Hayes. "We are excited to have the sons of three of our former players sign with us," Wallace added. "It makes you realize that they had a great experience going to school and playing football here and they want their sons to have that same experience. That's very rewarding."

Wallace said the Lions helped themselves in several areas.

"We really increased our speed at the skill positions and improved our depth on both the offensive and defensive lines," Wallace said. The additions on the defensive front are probably the most significant. "What really stands out for me are the defensive linemen we signed from high schools," he said. "We signed the runner-up for Class 4A Lineman of the Year in Blake Bean of Oneonta, the runner-up for Class 3A Lineman of the Year in Frank Williams of Madison Academy and the Class 1A Lineman of the Year in Eddquerion Harris of R.A. Hubbard. I don't ever remember signing three defensive linemen in one year that can play inside that are as quick and strong and active as these three."

Wallace was also excited about the signing of local Florence High School product Will Lovelace. "Will is one of the best long-snappers that I have ever seen and its great to know that we'll have someone in our program for four years that can take care of that situation," Wallace said.

UNA added seven defensive linemen, six receivers, four linebackers, four offensive linemen, three defensive backs, a running back, a long-snapper and one athlete.

Wallace said the 10 transfer that the Lions signed should all contribute immediately in the program.

"We feel like the eight junior college players that we signed can all come in and make immediate impacts, as well as both of our four-year transfers," Wallace said.

Justin Sims, a transfer from the University of Southern Mississippi, will not only bring experience but additional speed to the UNA program. He won the 2011 Conference USA  100-meter dash championship with a time of 10.28 and finished second in the league at 60 meters as a sophomore. He was a three-year letterman on the Southern Miss. football team but missed much of the 2013 season due to injury.

UNA added four signees from Jones (Miss.) Community College, including wide receiver Jarrett Smith - the brother of current UNA defensive lineman Shaquille Smith.
