HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

After holding several meetings to discuss rezoning plans for Huntsville City schools, Wednesday marked the last chance parents had to get more information on the schools systems rezoning plans.

The final meeting was held at Columbia High School. The rezoning plan isn't written in stone yet, but this early plan includes a feeder system that dictates what school a student goes to next. The plan also calls for some schools to close down.

Tuesday night's meeting was at Butler High, which is a school that may shut down along with Johnson High. Those two will merge into the new Jemison High.

"At the end of the day, it's really about the students and how it will affect their educational experience," said Isha Greene. Her daughter attends Columbia. "If your school is getting closed down or if you will have an influx of 200+ students, this is stuff you want to know as a parent so that you can prepare and adjust accordingly."

School officials said the rezoning plan impacts about 2,300 students and it's part of an effort to get the school system out from under a desegregation order. The rezoning plan is not final.  The department of justice is working on a plan too. A federal judge will make the final decision.

"We completed our negotiations with the department of justice last Friday and at the end of that we asked ‘are you opposed or unopposed to the motion that we will file' and they asked that we just summarize everything because we had a pretty wide range of discussions and provide that to them," said Superintendent Dr. Casey Wardynski.

Wardynski said he anticipates hearing something from the Department of Justice in the next few days. The new rezoning plan is set to be presented to the School Board for a vote Thursday night.
