MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) -

Alabama House Republicans are working on giving high school students more career training opportunities.

Montgomery rolled out their plan to expand dual enrollment courses between high schools and community colleges with career tech programs Tuesday morning.

The House GOP plan included $10 million in scholarships for students in grades 10-12, and an expansion of the program statewide.

"I am enrolled in the dual enrollment program through Calhoun," said Wesley Persons, a student at Decatur High School. "I'm taking an aviation course out there. First when I started my senior year I didn't know what I wanted to do at all and the dual enrollment program kind of opened up some opportunities for me."

"Keep in mind the jobs we're seeking to fill are good paying jobs, averaging around $50,000 dollars a year while the average income in Alabama for a family is around $40,000," explained Representative Mac Buttram.

There are currently about 2,100 students in dual enrollment programs statewide, and about 700 of them in North Alabama.
