Community rallies around woman facing propane shortage

A Good Samaritan in Hazel Green stepped up to help a woman we featured in a story about the United Propane Gas Company.

Doris Brown is an older woman who lost her husband about a year ago and lives off a fixed income. She contacted us about problems she was having with UPG. She said the company wouldn't honor her "pre-buy" price, and she could not afford the current price of nearly $4.

Brown was bundled up in extra layers of clothing and blankets in an effort to stay warm and conserve what propane she had left.

Tuesday, a man in Hazel Green who asked not to be identified offered to donate money to fill Brown's tank and supply her with extra heated blankets and heaters. The man said another member of his family and other community members offered to help as well.

When Doris was presented with the news by phone Tuesday, she said she was overwhelmed with joy and appreciation. She said it is always nice to have a reminder once in awhile that the world really is filled with good people.
