PERRY TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) -

A Lake County man slapped with charges after shooting his wife's dog four times while the animal was caged.

It happened just before 4 a.m. Tuesday at a home on Dorchester Road in Perry Township.

A 60-year-old woman called cops to report her husband, 68-year-old Roger Harnish, had just shot her dog. Upon arrival, Lake County Sheriff's Deputies heard an additional gunshots coming from the home.

The investigation reveals Harnish and his wife were arguing over finances. According to the wife, her husband came at her in an aggressive manner and she believed he was going to attack. That's when her dog, a 3-year-old male Rhodesian Ridgeback named Terry, became agitated at the confrontation and began to growl at Harnish as he went towards his wife.

Harnish allegedly said he was going to kill the dog. In an attempt to calm Terry down, the wife placed him in his wire kennel cage.

Terry continued to growl at Harnish from the closed cage. Harnish is then accused of going to the couple's bedroom, retrieving a 9mm handgun and shooting Terry twice while he was secured in the kennel. Two more shots were also fired.

Harnish admitted to shooting the dog four times while it was kenneled in the cage to ensure that it was dead, and the handgun was recovered at the scene. Deputies located Terry off the rear deck of the residence in the yard where Harnish had dragged the animal after he shot it.

Deputies found that the dog had severe head trauma, but was still alive. Deputies attempted to reach local animal rescue agencies, however were unable to make contact with anyone. The animal was observed to be suffering badly and had to be humanely dispatched by a deputy.

Harnish was arrested and charged with domestic violence against his wife and animal cruelty charges.
