Marshall Co. begins month-long amnesty for bad checks

MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Marshall County's District Attorney is giving people who owe money for bad checks or court restitution a get-out-of-jail-free card, but only through the month of February.

Officials with the DA's office feel it's a win-win offer because it allows people to come get their debts paid and in turn the victims get what is owed to them.

Outstanding bad checks and restitution cases number in the thousands, and the Marshall County Worthless Check and Restitution Recovery Units are working to recover the money. In an effort to do that, those who owe money can come in without fear of being arrested during the month of February to pay the money that is owed.

People who do owe money can call the office or stop by to make arrangements to get the debt paid. Officials with the DA's office said it helps do more than just close outstanding cases.

"Our number one goal is to get the money collected for the victims of this county and get them the money that they deserve that was taken from them whether it be by bad check or some misdemeanor charge," said District Attorney Chris Able.

If those people do not come in and settle up, warrants will be issued for their arrest and a roundup will take place in March.
