ALEXANDRIA, LA (KSLA) -

A 13-year-old Alexandria boy has been charged with cruelty to animals, after a video surfaced over the weekend on Facebook of a puppy being slapped.

Police in Alexandria say they received several complaints about the video showing a male abusing a small puppy. Before the boy reportedly deleted the video from his Facebook page, others had already made copies. One of them was forwarded to KSLA News 12. That video, lasting just 7 seconds, shows the boy setting the puppy into place in front of him on what appears to be a bench, before delivering an audible blow to the little dog's head. The pup yelps and leaps to the floor as laughter is heard in the background.

Police say they ultimately did find the puppy and identify the boy, but they also noted that they were given several false leads, and that "social media is not the proper method for reporting criminal activity."

According to a statement released by the Alexandria Police Department, "Many law enforcement agencies do not monitor social media 24/7. In fact, social media contributed to much disinformation regarding this case. Virtually every address for the suspect provided and attributed to social media was incorrect (although likely well intended). Officers had to spend significant time and resources exhausting these erroneous leads - before locating the puppy and perpetrator."

The statement goes on to request that "any person with direct knowledge relating to a crime should directly contact the appropriate law enforcement agency."

Police say the puppy has been removed from the home and a veterinarian says he is fine. They say "the final disposition of the puppy will be determined by judicial process."

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
