COURTLAND, AL (WAFF) -

This week, the International Paper plant in Courtland will take its last steps towards shutting down.

The final two paper machines are scheduled to be shut down, but the company said the date could be flexible.

The plant is set to close at the end of March. International Paper began laying off workers in December. Eventually, 1,100 people will lose their jobs.

In November, more than 30 local and regional companies held a job fair where they tried to match IP employees with new jobs. The company said the demand for paper has dropped and that's why they're closing the plant.
