IRS refund tips for Montgomery tax filers

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WSFA) -

Tax season has arrived, and the Internal Revenue Service is encouraging Montgomery residents to check out the tax benefits that are offered.

According to the IRS, one of the most overlooked benefits is the Earned Income Tax Credit. Workers who earned less than $52,000 last year may qualify for EITC, which could be worth up to $6,044. Tax filers can use the EITC Assistant at IRS.gov to check their eligibility. Last year about 31,000 Montgomery County residents claimed $91 million in EITC.

"As Montgomery-area filers start filing their returns now, we hope those who worked any part of last year won't forget to see if they qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit," said IRS spokesman Dan Boone.

On average, three out of four filers get refunds, and the IRS issues more than nine in ten of these refunds in less than 21 days. Filers can check the status of their refund using the "Where‘s My Refund" tool at IRS.gov

Boone also stated that e-file, combined with direct deposit, is the fastest, safest way to get a refund.

Lower-income and elderly filers who need help with their taxes can visit one of 6 free tax help sites staffed by IRS-certified volunteers in Montgomery, Autauga and Elmore Counties. Filers can call 1-800-906-9887 or visit IRS.gov to find the closest help site.
