CHILTON CO., AL (WSFA) -

The Alabama Department of Corrections is confirming that one of its own employees was killed in a vehicle crash related to this week's wintry weather.

Corrections officer Desi Arnez Patterson, 43, was killed in an accident on Highway 82 West in Chilton County. Patterson was en route from Montgomery to work at Bibb Correctional Facility in Brent when the crash happened.

"Our hearts are very heavy," said Corrections Commissioner Kim Thomas. "We lost a veteran correctional officer but more importantly- a caring husband and father."

Patterson had been with the Department of Corrections since August 1998. "His sense of duty is indicative of all DOC employees, and it greatly saddens me to see such professionalism rewarded with loss," Thomas said.

He leaves behind wife Shanetha, and sons Quinton, 22, and Jalen, 15.
