COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

School leaders in Leighton placed students and staff at Colbert County High School on lockdown Friday, after educators discovered threats on social media.

Investigators said they cannot go into detail about the threats, but that school leaders did the right thing by placing the school on lockdown until they located everyone involved.

The lockdown lasted between 30-40 minutes. Leighton Police and the Colbert County Sheriff's Department were called in to assist. School leaders said a parent found threats made by a student on Facebook and brought them to their attention. Police then located the student and took him into custody.

Superintendent Anthony Olivis said his district's number one priority is student safety. He said they will investigate all threats brought to their attention, no matter how serious or insignificant they may seem.

"If you don't take the smallest thing into consideration as something serious, then that one small thing might be the part that reaches up and gets you. As a matter of safety and consideration of others, that's why we make some of the decisions that we make," Olivis said.

The 18-year-old student is on an investigative hold at the Colbert County Jail.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
