Trojans open practice under Brock

LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -

It might still feel a little strange for the Lee County baseball team.

For the first time in 26 seasons, the Trojans opened preseason practice not under the direction of Rob Williams.

This is Brandon Brock's team now, after Williams retired in June.

The Trojan alum and former assistant says he's excited about the returning talent and is just ready for the first pitch.

After a few days of work, Brock gave his initial assessment of the team.

"Don't have any glaring strengths, but we don't have any glaring weaknesses either," he says. "That may be a little coach speak, but that's really what I see right now. I think we've got a good hand to play with. Our schedule's not easy. It's not going to be a cakewalk for us at all."

Brock says he isn't worried about being the "guy after Williams." He says he's only focused on being Brandon Brock.

He says that doesn't mean he isn't going to stick to many of the things he's learned from his former coach though.

"A lot of the things we have done though are just good, tried and true methods," Brock says. "You just don't change them. Coach Williams laid a great foundation, and it's easy to build on."

Brock says his goal is to bring the Trojans back to the level of the state's elite.

Many in Leesburg would like to see that happen sooner rather than later, especially after a disappointing 2013 by Lee County's standards.

The Trojans stayed away from only the second losing record in 25 years, but finished fourth in the region and were ousted in the first round of the state playoffs.

"You could just tell that they knew the expectations were much better than what we showed," he says. "The kids last year fought their hearts out. We just couldn't put it together and we lost a lot of games in the last inning. But that's baseball and it happens, but they've responded well so far."

Lee County opens the 2014 season by hosting the Trojan Invitational beginning February 20 when Crisp County, Colquitt County, and Rome join the Trojans in Leesburg.
