HEMSI ready to take care of others and their own

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Emergency crews are taking extra precautions in the arctic conditions. HEMSI officials said this weather is some of the worst crews have to deal with because of all the equipment and medicine they have on board.

They have specific equipment built into their ambulances to make sure the medicines stay at room temperature. Crews also monitor tire pressure and batteries. If a battery gets too low, the equipment has a built-in alert system that automatically lets HEMSI management know a battery needs to be charged or replaced.

HEMSI said they have not encountered any issues during this most recent cold snap, but they do not want to take any chances.

"The cold temperatures [are] hard on our vehicles as well as our people. They may be out there 10, 15, 30 minutes in the environment on a motor vehicle wreck," said Don Webster.

Officials said they are also closely watching their crews. They will rotate them in and out if a specific crew is outside for a specific period of time.
