Fort Payne City Schools decided to dismiss classes early Tuesday, but instead of sending the kids home, schools had to hold the buses.

Superintendent Jim Cunningham said the schools talked with the EMA for a weather briefing. At that time, they were told that the weather would be dry snow.

Shortly after 9 a.m., EMA alerted the schools that snow in Ider and Section was sticking to roadways. They reviewed the situation and decided to dismiss.

At 9:45 a.m., school officials decided the roads were too bad for a bus to complete its route. The schools are holding bus riders and will not move them until it is safe.

Around 11:30 a.m., schools provided bus riders who were been held at school a warm lunch.

By 3 p.m., all students had been safely sent home. Spreader trucks were able to grit pathways to allow parents safe access to school campuses. About 15 students were not able to be picked up by parents; the school sent them on a bus which took them home, following a spreader truck for safety.
