Homeless counts underway in Alabama

NORTH ALABAMA (WAFF) -

Two groups conducted homeless counts in the Tennessee Valley this month.

The North Alabama Coalition for the Homeless are conducting its annual count of homeless.

The group will take the survey to Madison, Morgan and Limestone counties. The count started Monday morning and will end Tuesday night at 6 p.m.

The coalition said the count shows the number of people who are homeless on any given night, and that the information is critical in developing policies and getting federal funding.

A local outreach group also focused their attention on the homeless this week.

The homeless outreach group First Stop took to the streets to get a homeless count.

The group planned to go out at three different times on Tuesday. They'll survey areas and count how many people are homeless and on the street in our area.

First Stop is an independent local non-profit. The group's primary goal is to reduce the number of homeless people on the street. They help people in homeless camps and try to place them in permanent housing.

The first head count starts at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
