HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

As North Alabama braces for brutally cold temperatures, the southern half of the state is under a winter storm warning.

Monday afternoon, Governor Robert Bentley declared a state of emergency, and the Alabama Department of Transportation is making preparations to position equipment needed to help keep roads in that area as safe and passable as possible.

In North Alabama, the threat of snow and ice is not as strong, but the bitter cold will be a problem. For the first time, warming centers are opening in Huntsville.

The Grateful Life Church on Oakwood Avenue has cleared out its sanctuary to make room for cots, tables, and chairs. Hot meals will be served, and the church van is available to give people rides.

For more information, you can email the Grateful Life Church. Along with Grateful Life, Operation Stand Down also has a warming center in Huntsville at 4000 Marie Street. Both centers are open through Thursday night.
