SELMA, AL (WSFA) -

Selma pharmacist Jim Creech has the perfect medicine for handicap parking violators; just obey the city ordinance. If only it were that easy.

"It makes it difficult for our customers who really need that space to get their medicines," said Creech.

Creech's drug store is located in downtown Selma, a corner store with a handicap parking spot right out front. He's lost count the number of times people have taken advantage of the space knowing full well they're not handicapped.

That's about to change though.

"It's a burden," said Selma Police Chief William Riley.

Riley says this isn't a situation where they've ignored the problem.

"We've gotten complaints from citizens and I told them once we got our serious crimes under control such as the shootings we'll deal with it. That's what we're doing now," Riley said.

First offense? Fifty dollars, just like the sign says. No warnings.

"We're looking at putting plain clothes officers around and we'll also look at some of our crossing guards and have them be on the lookout," said Riley.

If it continues to be an issue in the city the chief says he'll push for higher fines.

Probate offices around the state offer forms to people who inquire about getting a handicap placard for legitimate reasons. The forms must be filled out and signed by a doctor.

Meantime, the message may already be getting out in Selma. No violators were reported Monday, and the friendly pharmacist on the corner hopes it stays that way.
