Emergency crews ready for more cold-related calls

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Cold weather is keeping emergency responders extra busy this winter. HEMSI crews and firefighters said they are getting a record number of calls.

Those calls encompass everything from fires caused by space heaters to the aftermath of frozen and busted pipes. Captain Frank McKenzie with Huntsville Fire & Rescue said the majority of calls are coming from monitored fire alarm systems.

The bitter cold poses a big threat to firefighters; Capt. McKenzie said being exposed to water heightens the risk for hypothermia. With more cold weather on the way, he said they are gearing up.

"Our crews ran quite a few extra calls because of busted water lines and the next few days are going to be just as cold. Hopefully we won't have as many because people took preparations to prepare a little better this time," said McKenzie.

The week prior to the last cold snap, Huntsville Fire responded to about 90 calls. During the last snap, that number doubled – more than 180 calls.

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
