(WMC-TV) - ANDY, WILL IT WORK?Perfect Bacon Bowl = WISE BUY (in a standard oven ONLY!)
The Perfect Bacon Bowl, $12, claims it's "...the easy way to make delicious edible bowls out of bacon..." and stuff them with whatever you want.
It took a bacon baron to help us on this one: Chef Aaron Winters. Winters is the charcuterie chef of Hog & Hominy, 707 W. Brookhaven Cr. He rolls the restaurant's sausage by hand and designs its signature pork dishes and pizzas.
Winters greased the Perfect Bacon Bowl with cooking oil as directed. He crisscrossed the bowl's bulb with a single bacon strip cut in half to form a "X." Then he wrapped two full bacon strips around the bulb's base and top to form the raw bacon mold.
As directed, Winters placed the Perfect Bacon Bowl on top of a cooking sheet in an oven pre-heated to 375 F. The directions said to let it cook for 35 minutes, then, if necessary, add 3-minute increments if the bacon hasn't reached desired crispness.
The cooking time actually took 38 minutes.
The bacon appeared to be cooked perfectly once Winters removed it from the oven. After letting it cool for a few minutes, he removed the bacon bowl from the Perfect Bacon Bowl.
It was sturdy enough to take a stuffing of Hog & Hominy's chicken and andouille gumbo. The blissful flavor of the bacon bowl made an already mighty-fine gumbo even better!
"I was actually impressed," Winters said. "I was very skeptical of whether it was going to work or not. It turned out nice!"
The Perfect Bacon Bowl is a WISE BUY.
However, you cannot use thick, center-cut bacon on it -- and we do not recommend using it in a microwave oven.
We tried it as directed in a microwave oven. It made a nasty mess. The microwave also overcooked the bacon on the Perfect Bacon Bowl to a charred, tasteless carbon cup.
