BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Jefferson County Coroner's office has identified the man killed in a fatal crash that killed one man and injured two others.

The coroner's office says 30-year-old Michael O'Bryant Chatmon from Childersburg was killed in the wreck. It happened around 5:45 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 26 on Interstate 65 near exit 252. The crash shut down all northbound lanes for about three hours.

Police say a silver Honda sedan was driving the wrong way on the interstate. It crashed head-on with a dark-colored sedan. The driver of the silver car died at the scene. The other driver was hurt and taken to UAB Hospital. Police do not know the severity of his injuries.

Police say a third car also crashed. That driver was taken to Brookwood Hospital and later released.

Lt. Brian Gilham with Vestavia Police says they don't know why the driver was going the wrong way. They're waiting on toxicology reports to determine if alcohol or drugs were involved.

"Primarily we're waiting on toxicology reports from the primary contributing unit. Obviously if we get any more witness statements about where he came onto the interstate but determining the contributing factors is what will be our goal," said Lt. Gilham.

Lt. Gilham says the man who died and the two injured men are all adults.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
