Suspect in custody after chase, Decatur bridge closure

DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - Authorities have the suspect from a high-speed chase in custody.

The Highway 31 bridge going into Decatur was closed as authorities negotiate with the suspect.

The high-speed chase began in Madison County around 3 a.m. Saturday. Deputies said that the driver at some point got into the eastbound lane of I-565, headed the wrong way.

Authorities said the man had a gun and fired at a deputy's vehicle during the chase, hitting it several times.

The man climbed down to a catwalk underneath the bridge after ditching his vehicle around 3:40 a.m. Authorities with several law enforcement agencies were on scene.

The suspect was finally apprehended sometime after 9 a.m.
