BOAZ, AL (WAFF) -

Marshall County officials are trying to figure out how to fill the void after a major poultry industry in the city of Boaz wound down operations Friday.

Matt Arnold with the Economic Development Council said approximately 300 jobs will be shifted down the road to Guntersville. 75 are expected to go to Russellville. But now there is a very large building in Boaz that is looking for a new tenant.

Arnold said they've been working with Pilgrim's Pride officials who wish to sell the building. Once their equipment has been stripped from the facility, it will be ready for a new tenant. The company has appointed a local person to help mediate for the company, which Arnold said is a big help.

Mayor Tim Walker returned Thursday from a meeting with company officials at their Colorado headquarters. While he said his meeting was productive, the city must now prepare for the economic impact of losing jobs in the town.

"Losing jobs is never a good thing, but at the same time it gives us an opportunity of a workforce that will be in place that maybe somebody else can take advantage of. We're going to be trying to replace it with even better jobs," he said.

The mayor said the governor and others are working to do what they can to help attract a new industry to the Boaz facility.
