Black Belt Adventures celebrates 5th anniversary

BULLOCK CO., AL (WSFA) -

Black Belt Adventures just celebrated its fifth anniversary. Black Belt is a non-profit group that promotes hunting and fishing in the 23 black belt counties in Alabama, which are located in central Alabama.

Big game hunter Gordon Stark has bagged some of the biggest animals thousands of miles away in Africa. This week we found Stark in Bullock County along with Sporting Classic magazine writer Bob Matthews and Shenadoah Plantation owner Tom Lanier.

"This has been a dream of mine to do this and I thank the gentlemen for making it happen," said Stark, a native of Pennsylvania.

Stark says he expressed a desire to come to Alabama over campfire in Africa with Matthews. Matthews is writing a story about Stark and Black Belt Adventures.

The three men stepped back in time and hunted quail the traditional, southern way -- on horse back and horse and wagon.

"This is the way they used to do it. We just wanted to go back to tradition," Matthews said.

Stark just may be the story of how far Black Belt Adventures has come in five years. 11,000 jobs connected with the hunting and fishing industry and growing. Add it up including what hunters and fishermen spend and you're talking about a $1 billion industry in Alabama, according to Black Belt Adventures based in Montgomery.

"I know calls to me from my website have tripled," Lanier said.

Black Belt leaders say the mere fact a big game hunter like Stark is hunting in Alabama is evidence Black Belt Adventures hit the bulls eye with its goal of attracting hunters.

Whether it's on the rugged plains of Africa or beating the bushes in Bullock County this is home for hunters like Stark.
