Family dog helps scare burglar away from home

Sydney charged at a burglar who had just exited the family home with a bunch of loot. Sydney charged at a burglar who had just exited the family home with a bunch of loot.

A Madison County family is thanking its four-legged best friend for helping foil a burglary. A woman and her dog came home as an intruder was still inside the house, and were waiting for him when he came out.

Donna Boyett and her husband James are grateful she had her Australian Shepherd, Sydney, with her when she discovered a door to their home had been forced open by a burglar. The intruder had loaded up three of the family's backpacks with jewelry, guns, watches, and anything else he could grab.

With Sydney by her side, Donna called James, and police stayed outside until a strange man stepped out of the door with a load of stolen property.

Sydney didn't like what she saw.

"I yelled, ‘Get him!' And she went after him. I wanted to scare him. I didn't really know what she would do besides bark, but she chased him right back into the garage," Donna said.

Donna had been watching the situation from a nearby construction site. James, on the other hand, could only hear what was going on over the phone.

"I heard Sydney start barking, and then I heard my wife say ‘get him.' Then she hung up the phone," James recalled. His reaction at that point was to "drive faster."

Donna said the intruder waited a few minutes before ducking out through a back door – without any loot. He jumped into a vehicle and drove off. Deputies picked up a suspect within minutes.

The Boyetts and their kids say they've recovered just fine, and they are looking at their beloved best friend a little differently.

"I am so proud of her," said Donna. "She is definitely my heroine."

"She's the best dog ever," added James.
