What is 'swatting'?

A swatting prank was recently played on a Huntsville resident. A swatting prank was recently played on a Huntsville resident.

According to the FBI, swatting is a prank in which someone gets law enforcement, usually a SWAT team, to surround a home.

Someone calls 911 and tells the operator that they've shot a family member and might kill others in the house. The person who does this uses technology to make it look like the emergency call is coming from the victim's phone and home.

People who do this are also involved in other cyber crimes such as identity theft and credit card fraud. They do it to brag or get revenge on someone who upset them online. The threats usually come from the online gaming community, where people interact and play without knowing each other.

The FBI suggests you make a police report if you've received a swatting threat, so if they do get a 911 call, they'll have the report on file. This will give them a heads up that it could be a hoax.
