Albertville sends delinquent ambulance customers to collections

ALBERTVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The days of free rides in Marshall County ambulances are coming to an end. The Albertville City Council approved a plan to hire a collection agency Monday night.

City officials said they have a billing agency, but after four notices to delinquent customers, they are not getting the message across, and thus took it a step further.

The city runs its own ambulance and answers some 15-20 calls per day. That costs money, and city officials said in the last ten months they have delinquent accounts totaling over $126,000.

Council President Nathan Broadhurst said the city relies on the collections it receives to keep the ambulance in service, as the city cannot afford to subsidize it. He said it's the city's intent not to go after people with public insurance who owe less than $100 and who are on a fixed income.

"For those people that do have higher co-pays or are not utilizing insurance, but are utilizing our services and not paying; those are really the ones that we're trying to get connected to and get payment from," explained Broadhurst.

He said it's only if their collections are made good that they could consider expanding the service.
