Stepmother tells police teen's shooting accidental

Kedrick's stepmother said her gun accidentally fired when the teen hugged her. Kedrick's stepmother said her gun accidentally fired when the teen hugged her.

The family of Kedrick Bowman said his stepmother was holding the gun when it fired, and that the shooting was accidental.

Kedrick died after being taken off life support. The 17-year-old was a junior at Decatur High School and a member of the Red Raiders football team.

At the home on Cotton Place where the shooting took place, stepmother Cynthia Bowman and Kedrick's father said they were too overcome by grief to go on camera, but provided an account of what happened.

Cynthia said she held the pistol after she got out of her car and it accidentally went off outside. When she got inside, her stepson hugged her, as he did every time she came back home. She still had the gun in her hand, and it fired again, this time hitting Kedrick in the head.

The Bowmans said the gun, a .380 caliber, is faulty and they thought the problem had been fixed. Investigators will work to find out if there is a mechanical issue with the gun.

"According to the family, there were mechanical issues with the gun that caused it to fire without the trigger being pulled. We do have possession of the gun; it is going to be submitted to the Department of Forensic Science to be examined and tested. We will learn everything about any issues there might have been," said Lieutenant John Crouch.

Police said it appears the shooting was an accident and Cynthia Bowman is not charged with a crime at this time, but the case will go to a Morgan County grand jury. Charges can be brought in non-intentional deaths.
