BOAZ, AL (WAFF) -

Some students in the Tennessee Valley were still in class on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday, and some wanted to know why.

Several school districts decided to have students in class Monday despite the holiday. All the districts who were in session said the same thing – their hands were tied by the school calendar.

DeKalb County, Marshall County, Guntersville City, and Boaz City Schools all had students in the classroom Monday.

State lawmakers voted to push back the school calendar for an extra two weeks to see if it would create more tourism in the state at the end of the summer. School systems still have to get in all 180 days that students are required to be in the classroom. Many had the option of making MLK Day or Labor Day an in-session day to make that qualification.

Boaz City Schools Superintendent Mark Isley said since lawmakers decided to compress the school year, they are making the most of the day by educating students about the civil rights leader.

"Our kids are going to be taught more today by being in school, so we're going to turn this into a positive. I will say if, given the choice, we would have liked to have had a choice. In this case, we simply did not," said Isley.

For the 2014-2015 school year, things will go back to normal, with local school districts once again in control of their own calendars.
