NORTH ALABAMA (WAFF) -

A celebration was held Sunday in advance of Monday's observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

People gathered at the Bob Harrison Senior Center in Huntsville for the 13th Annual Martin Luther King Open Mic Night.

Performances of art, music, poetry, dance and more centered on reflections of the civil rights leader, as well as anti-Apartheid activist Nelson Mandela, who passed away in December.

Several events will be taking place across the Tennessee Valley to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday.

The MLK Holiday Ceremony in Athens will be at the Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church starting at 11 a.m. Monday. The guest speaker is the Reverend Edward Jackson from Birmingham. A chorus will perform and lunch will be served afterward.

A march is scheduled in Russellville. Lineup starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Chucky Mullins Center. The march begins at 10:30 a.m. The group will loop back to the center for a program following the march.

Huntsville's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast will be held in the North Hall of the Von Braun Center at 8 a.m. Two people from the city will be awarded the MLK Jr. 2014 Unity Award.
