Man attacks woman with hammer, sets fire to home

(WMC-TV) – Memphis police say not only did a man attack a woman with a hammer, but he tried to kill her by setting her bathroom on fire and they say this all happened in front of a young child.

Neighbor Trent Harrison said, "The house just started blazing up just like somebody just threw something on it like a bomb or something."

The streets around Semmes and Carnes came to a screeching halt, when a domestic violence standoff ended in a burned out house.

"I mean, smoke everywhere," said Harrison.

A neighbor who said it was hard for everyone to breathe at one point.

Police say the suspect attacked his girlfriend in the 700 block of Semmes around 1:30 Saturday morning.

She somehow got away and fled to a friend's home.

Lt. Col. Loris Hopkins with the MPD said, "When investigators made the scene, the suspect refused to come out."

Then, police say he set his house on fire. It's unclear how long the standoff lasted.

Witnesses say when the fire started going, the man knocked out windows and started trying to save his cats by throwing them out of the first-floor window.

Lt. Col. Hopkins said, "After the officers continued to talk with him, the suspect came out without incident."

The woman was treated and released from the hospital, the suspect carted off in an ambulance.

Neighbors are surprised.

Harrison said, "He seemed like a pretty good guy, but I don't know what made him revert to do what he did."

The scene and circumstances have neighbors concerned.

"It seems like the neighborhood is just changing around. You've got good people who live around here, who pay their taxes," Harrison said.

Police have not released any information about the suspect.
