The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team turned in one of its most complete performances of the season, and the Chargers were rewarded with a 1-1 tie with visiting Alaska Anchorage on Friday night in WCHA action at the Propst Arena at the Von Braun Center. UAH moves to 1-23-1 (1-13-1 WCHA) while the Seawolves move to 11-9-3 (7-7-3 WCHA).
Trailing by one after two periods, the Chargers electrified the VBC crowd when Brent Fletcher scored his first career goal at 6:01 of the period.
Steven Koshey started the scoring play by feeding it ahead to Matt Salhany who skated into the zone with speed. He then suddenly stopped near the far faceoff dot, causing his defender to continue towards the goal line and creating open space in front which allowed a perfect pass through the slot to Fletcher who fired it past Kamal for the score.
For Koshey the assist marked his sixth point of the season, while Salhany's helper padded his team-leading point total to nine.
The visitors struck first, scoring near the midway point of the second period when Austin Coldwell scored his fourth of the season at 9:54.
The goal was the only one allowed on the night by UAH netminder Matt Larose who stopped the 24 other shots he faced in the contest as UAA outshot the hosts by a 24-17.
The teams will do battle again tomorrow night at 7:07 p.m. The first 500 kids in attendance will receive a free youth UAH Charger camouflage jersey.
