HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A case is now a homicide investigation after a man died from injuries following a Friday evening shooting.

It happened at the Knight Garden Apartments on Knight Road after 5 p.m.

The Huntsville Police Department confirmed 54-year-old Timothy Smith, who lived in the apartment complex, died Saturday morning.

Denny Lane and other neighbors said they heard a rapid succession of gunshots and some say they heard a vehicle speeding away from the scene.

Huntsville Police rushed to the scene and were flagged down by a witness who urged them into one of the apartments.

"The officer responded and found that the victim was in fact in the apartment, suffering from one gunshot wound to the head. He was transported with life-threatening injuries," said Lieutenant Larry Childers.

Police scoured the horseshoe driveway, knocked on doors and questioned neighbors in the complex while crime scene investigators combed the scene. They zeroed in on a second scene in the Phoenix House Apartments down the street.

Lane admits Friday's violence is not surprising. "This is kind of an infested location, drugs and things. You never know what to expect," he said.

Police fanned out in search of what they say is a single gunman. "We do have suspect information but the investigation is ongoing," Lt. Childers said.
