JACKSON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

After months of debate, a final draft of a dangerous animal ordinance has been prepared for consideration by the Jackson County Commission.

Currently, the county government can do very little with regard to dangerous animals. If passed, county leaders feel they will have an ordinance which will, to coin a phrase, have some bite.

Chairman Matthew Hodges said it is not a leash law, but rather enables Animal Control to take action if someone is bitten or if there is a dog that acts aggressively towards others. Hodges said in the past, all Animal Control could do was ask the owner if the dog had its rabies shots.

The new ordinance proposal (PDF) allows for custody and court jurisdiction. "We will ask if that animal has its rabies shot, but even if they do, if they have bitten someone or if they're showing extreme aggression, we'll take the animal into care until the court has determined if it's necessary to declare it dangerous," Hodges said.

Hodges anticipates a vote could be taken by the commission in March.
